24-year-old Bophana Audiovisual Resources Center student Van Socheata, who was a finalist in the 2015 Cambodia’s Smart Gadget Girl competition, produced her third short film for Rithy Panh’s ‘One Dollar Project’, which showcases documentaries centred on Cambodians living below the poverty line. Socheata’s story is about Battambang rat catcher Savath and his daily struggle to provide for his young family. It was shot over 8 days in Otaki commune with a budget of less than $500 and a crew of 4 people.
Shake It Off
Kampot-based disability charity Epic Arts have released their third epic music video parody, with local lead Onn Sokny shaking off discrimination to the popular tune by Taylor Swift. A total of 63 artists from Cambodian organisations including Cambodia Living Arts, Phare Ponleu Selpak, Tiny Toones and Amrita Performing Arts were featured, who worked unscripted over 6 days of filming. The impressive production was co-funded by Epic Arts, the European Union and UNESCO/IFCD as part of their ‘Development of Professional Performing Arts’ program.
